והות קרבא תקוף בין בית שאול ובין בית דוד ובית דוד אזלין ותקיפין ובית שאול אזלין ומאכין:
wmakyn azlyn shawl wbyth wthqypyn azlyn dwd wbyth dwd byth wbyn shawl byth byn thqwp qrba whwth
Now there was long war between Saul’s house and David’s house. David grew stronger and stronger, but Saul’s house grew weaker and weaker.

ואתילידו לדוד בנין בחברון והוה בוכריה אמנון לאחינועם דמיזרעאל:
dmyzreal lakhynwem amnwn bwkryh whwh bkhbrwn bnyn ldwd wathylydw
Sons were born to David in Hebron. His firstborn was Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess;

ותניניה כלאב לאביגיל אתת נבל דמכרמלא ותליתאה אבשלום בר מעכה בת תלמי מלכא דגשור:
dgshwr mlka thlmy bth mekh br abshlwm wthlythah dmkrmla nbl athth labygyl klab wthnynyh
and his second, Chileab, of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; and the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;

ורביעאה אדוניה בר חגית וחמישאה שפטיה בר אביטל:
abyTl br shpTyh wkhmyshah khgyth br adwnyh wrbyeah
and the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;

ושתיתאה יתרעם לעגלה אתת דוד אלין אתילידו לדוד בחברון:
bkhbrwn ldwd athylydw alyn dwd athth leglh ythrem wshthythah
and the sixth, Ithream, of Eglah, David’s wife. These were born to David in Hebron.

והוה כד הות קרבא בין בית שאול ובין בית דוד ואבנר הוה מתקף בבית שאול:
shawl bbyth mthqp hwh wabnr dwd byth wbyn shawl byth byn qrba hwth kd whwh
While there was war between Saul’s house and David’s house, Abner made himself strong in Saul’s house.

ולשאול לחינתא ושמה רצפה בת איה ואמר לאבנר מה דין עלתא לות לחינתא דאבא:
daba lkhyntha lwth eltha dyn mh labnr wamr ayh bth rtsph wshmh lkhyntha wlshawl
Now Saul had a concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah; and Ishbosheth said to Abner, “Why have you gone in to my father’s concubine?”

ותקיף לאבנר לחדא על פתגמי איש בשת ואמר הלא רישא דכלבא אנא מכען הויתי גבר הדיוט לשארא דבית יהודה יומא דין אעביד טיבו עם בית שאול אבוך עם אחוהי ועם רחמוהי ולא מסרתיך בידא דדוד ומכען את מסער עלי חוב אתתא יומא דין:
dyn ywma aththa khwb ely mser ath wmken ddwd byda msrthyk wla rkhmwhy wem akhwhy em abwk shawl byth em Tybw aebyd dyn ywma yhwdh dbyth lshara hdywT gbr hwythy mken ana dklba rysha hla wamr bshth aysh pthgmy el lkhda labnr wthqyp
Then Abner was very angry about Ishbosheth’s words, and said, “Am I a dog’s head that belongs to Judah? Today I show kindness to your father Saul’s house, to his brothers, and to his friends, and have not delivered you into the hand of David; and yet you charge me today with a fault concerning this woman!

כדין יעבד יי לאבנר וכדין יוסיף ליה ארי כמא דקים יי לדוד ארי כדין אעביד ליה:
lyh aebyd kdyn ary ldwd yy dqym kma ary lyh ywsyp wkdyn labnr yy yebd kdyn
God do so to Abner, and more also, if, as Yahweh has sworn to David, I don’t do even so to him:

לאעברא מלכו מבית שאול ולאקמא ית כורסי דוד על ישראל ועל דבית יהודה מדן ועד באר שבע:
shbe bar wed mdn yhwdh dbyth wel yshral el dwd kwrsy yth wlaqma shawl mbyth mlkw laebra
to transfer the kingdom from Saul’s house, and to set up David’s throne over Israel and over Judah, from Dan even to Beersheba.”

ולא יכיל עוד לאתבא ית אבנר פתגמא מדדחל יתיה:
ythyh mddkhl pthgma abnr yth lathba ewd ykyl wla
He could not answer Abner another word, because he was afraid of him.

ושלח אבנר אזגדין לות דוד מאתריה למימר מקימנא במן דעבד ארעא למימר גזר קימך עמי והא ידי עמך לאסחרא לותך ית כל ישראל:
yshral kl yth lwthk laskhra emk ydy wha emy qymk gzr lmymr area debd bmn mqymna lmymr mathryh dwd lwth azgdyn abnr wshlkh
Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, “Whose is the land?” and saying, “Make your alliance with me, and behold, my hand will be with you to bring all Israel around to you.”

ואמר טב אנא אגזר עמך קים ברם פתגמא חד אנא שאיל מעמך למימר לא תחזי ית אפי אלהין קדם מתיותך ית מיכל בת שאול במיתך לאתחזאה קדמי:
qdmy lathkhzah bmythk shawl bth mykl yth mthywthk qdm alhyn apy yth thkhzy la lmymr memk shayl ana khd pthgma brm qym emk agzr ana Tb wamr
David said, “Good. I will make a treaty with you, but one thing I require of you. That is, you will not see my face unless you first bring Michal, Saul’s daughter, when you come to see my face.”

ושלח דוד אזגדין לות איש בשת בר שאול למימר הב ית אתתי ית מיכל דארסית לי במאה ערלות פלשתאי:
plshthay erlwth bmah ly darsyth mykl yth aththy yth hb lmymr shawl br bshth aysh lwth azgdyn dwd wshlkh
David sent messengers to Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, saying, “Deliver me my wife Michal, whom I was given to marry for one hundred foreskins of the Philistines.”

ושלח איש בשת ודברה מלות בעלה מלות פלטיאל בר ליש:
lysh br plTyal mlwth belh mlwth wdbrh bshth aysh wshlkh
Ishbosheth sent and took her from her husband, Paltiel the son of Laish.
16
ואזל עמה בעלה אזיל ובכי בתראה עד עלמת ואמר ליה אבנר אזיל תוב ותב:
wthb thwb azyl abnr lyh wamr elmth ed bthrah wbky azyl belh emh wazl
Her husband went with her, weeping as he went, and followed her to Bahurim. Then Abner said to him, “Go! Return!” and he returned.

ופתגם אבנר הוה עם סבי ישראל למימר אף תמלי אף מדקמוהי הויתון בען ית דוד למהוי מלכא עליכון:
elykwn mlka lmhwy dwd yth ben hwythwn mdqmwhy ap thmly ap lmymr yshral sby em hwh abnr wpthgm
Abner had communication with the elders of Israel, saying, “In times past, you sought for David to be king over you.

וכען עבידו ארי יי אמר לדוד למימר ביד דוד עבדי אפרוק ית עמי ישראל מידא דפלשתאי ומיד כל בעלי דבביהון:
dbbyhwn bely kl wmyd dplshthay myda yshral emy yth aprwq ebdy dwd byd lmymr ldwd amr yy ary ebydw wken
Now then do it! For Yahweh has spoken of David, saying, ‘By the hand of my servant David, I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies.’”

ומליל אף אבנר קדם דבית בנימן ואזל אף אבנר למללא קדם דוד בחברון ית כל דתקן בעיני ישראל ובעיני כל דבית בנימן:
bnymn dbyth kl wbeyny yshral beyny dthqn kl yth bkhbrwn dwd qdm lmlla abnr ap wazl bnymn dbyth qdm abnr ap wmlyl
Abner also spoke in the ears of Benjamin; and Abner went also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel and to the whole house of Benjamin.

ואתא אבנר לות דוד לחברון ועמיה עסרין גבריא ועבד דוד לאבנר ולגבריא דעמיה משתיא:
mshthya demyh wlgbrya labnr dwd webd gbrya esryn wemyh lkhbrwn dwd lwth abnr watha
So Abner came to David to Hebron, and twenty men with him. David made Abner and the men who were with him a feast.

ואמר אבנר לדוד איקום ואיזל ואכנוש לות רבוני מלכא ית כל ישראל ויגזרון עמך קים ותמלוך בכל דרעוא נפשך ושלח דוד ית אבנר ואזל בשלם:
bshlm wazl abnr yth dwd wshlkh npshk drewa bkl wthmlwk qym emk wygzrwn yshral kl yth mlka rbwny lwth waknwsh wayzl ayqwm ldwd abnr wamr
Abner said to David, “I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel to my lord the king, that they may make a covenant with you, and that you may reign over all that your soul desires.” David sent Abner away; and he went in peace.

והא עבדי דוד ויואב אתא מן משריתא ועדאה סגיאה עמהון איתיאו ואבנר ליתוהי עם דוד בחברון ארי שלחיה ואזל בשלם:
bshlm wazl shlkhyh ary bkhbrwn dwd em lythwhy wabnr aythyaw emhwn sgyah wedah mshrytha mn atha wywab dwd ebdy wha
Behold, David’s servants and Joab came from a raid and brought in a great plunder with them; but Abner was not with David in Hebron, for he had sent him away, and he had gone in peace.
23
ויואב וכל חילא דעמיה אתו וחויאו ליואב למימר אתא אבנר בר נר לות מלכא ושלחיה ואזל בשלם:
bshlm wazl wshlkhyh mlka lwth nr br abnr atha lmymr lywab wkhwyaw athw demyh khyla wkl wywab
When Joab and all the army who was with him had come, they told Joab, “Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he has sent him away, and he has gone in peace.”
24
ואתא יואב לות מלכא ואמר מה עבדתא הא אתא אבנר לותך למא דנן שלחתיה ואזל מיזל:
myzl wazl shlkhthyh dnn lma lwthk abnr atha ha ebdtha mh wamr mlka lwth ywab watha
Then Joab came to the king and said, “What have you done? Behold, Abner came to you. Why is it that you have sent him away, and he is already gone?

ידעתא ית אבנר בר נר ארי לאטעיותך אתא ולמידע ית מיפקך וית מיעלך ולמידע ית כל דאת עביד:
ebyd dath kl yth wlmyde myelk wyth mypqk yth wlmyde atha laTeywthk ary nr br abnr yth ydetha
You know Abner the son of Ner. He came to deceive you, and to know your going out and your coming in, and to know all that you do.”
26
ונפק יואב מן קדם דוד ושלח אזגדין בתר אבנר ואתיבו יתיה מגובא דסירתא ודוד לא ידע:
yde la wdwd dsyrtha mgwba ythyh wathybw abnr bthr azgdyn wshlkh dwd qdm mn ywab wnpq
When Joab had come out from David, he sent messengers after Abner, and they brought him back from the well of Sirah; but David didn’t know it.

ותב אבנר לחברון ואפניה יואב לגו תרעא למללא עמיה בשליא ומחהי תמן בסטר ירכיה ומית בדמא דעשהאל אחוהי:
akhwhy deshhal bdma wmyth yrkyh bsTr thmn wmkhhy bshlya emyh lmlla threa lgw ywab wapnyh lkhbrwn abnr wthb
When Abner had returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the middle of the gate to speak with him quietly, and struck him there in the body, so that he died for the blood of Asahel his brother.
28
ושמע דוד מבתר כן ואמר זכאי אנא ומלכותי מן קדם יי עד עלמא מדמא דאבנר בר נר:
nr br dabnr mdma elma ed yy qdm mn wmlkwthy ana zkay wamr kn mbthr dwd wshme
Afterward, when David heard it, he said, “I and my kingdom are guiltless before Yahweh forever of the blood of Abner the son of Ner.

יחולון על ריש דיואב ואל כל בית אבוהי ולא יפסוק מבית יואב דאיב וסגיר ומתקיף באגד ומתקטיל בחרבא וחסיר מזון:
mzwn wkhsyr bkhrba wmthqTyl bagd wmthqyp wsgyr dayb ywab mbyth ypswq wla abwhy byth kl wal dywab rysh el ykhwlwn
Let it fall on the head of Joab and on all his father’s house. Let there not fail from the house of Joab one who has a discharge, or who is a leper, or who leans on a staff, or who falls by the sword, or who lacks bread.”
30
ויואב ואבישי אחוהי קטלו לאבנר על דקטל ית עשהאל אחוהון בגבעון בקרבא:
bqrba bgbewn akhwhwn eshhal yth dqTl el labnr qTlw akhwhy wabyshy wywab
So Joab and Abishai his brother killed Abner, because he had killed their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.
31
ואמר דוד ליואב ולכל עמא דעמיה בזעו לבושיכון ואסרו סקין וספדו קדם אבנר ומלכא דוד אזיל בתר ערסא:
ersa bthr azyl dwd wmlka abnr qdm wspdw sqyn wasrw lbwshykwn bzew demyh ema wlkl lywab dwd wamr
David said to Joab and to all the people who were with him, “Tear your clothes, and clothe yourselves with sackcloth, and mourn in front of Abner.” King David followed the bier.
32
וקברו ית אבנר בחברון וארים מלכא ית קליה ובכא על קברא דאבנר ובכו כל עמא:
ema kl wbkw dabnr qbra el wbka qlyh yth mlka warym bkhbrwn abnr yth wqbrw
They buried Abner in Hebron; and the king lifted up his voice and wept at Abner’s grave; and all the people wept.
33
ואלא מלכא על אבנר ואמר הכמימת רשיעין ימות אבנר:
abnr ymwth rshyeyn hkmymth wamr abnr el mlka wala
The king lamented for Abner, and said, “Should Abner die as a fool dies?

ידך לא אסירן ורגלך לא לזיקין דנחש אתקרבו כמפל קדם גברין רשיעין נפלתא ואוסיפו כל עמא למבכי עלוהי:
elwhy lmbky ema kl wawsypw npltha rshyeyn gbryn qdm kmpl athqrbw dnkhsh lzyqyn la wrglk asyrn la ydk
Your hands weren’t bound, and your feet weren’t put into fetters. As a man falls before the children of iniquity, so you fell.” All the people wept again over him.
35
ואתא כל עמא לאוכלא ית דוד לחמא עד דיומא קים וקים דוד למימר כדין יעביד לי יי וכדין יוסיף אלהין קדם מיעל שמשא אטעום לחמא או כל מדעם:
mdem kl aw lkhma aTewm shmsha myel qdm alhyn ywsyp wkdyn yy ly yebyd kdyn lmymr dwd wqym qym dywma ed lkhma dwd yth lawkla ema kl watha
All the people came to urge David to eat bread while it was yet day; but David swore, saying, “God do so to me, and more also, if I taste bread or anything else, until the sun goes down.”
36
וכל עמא אשתמודעו ושפר בעיניהון ככל דעבד מלכא בעיני כל עמא טב:
Tb ema kl beyny mlka debd kkl beynyhwn wshpr ashthmwdew ema wkl
All the people took notice of it, and it pleased them, as whatever the king did pleased all the people.
37
וידעו כל עמא וכל ישראל ביומא ההוא ארי לא הות בעצת מלכא למקטל ית אבנר בר נר:
nr br abnr yth lmqTl mlka betsth hwth la ary hhwa bywma yshral wkl ema kl wydew
So all the people and all Israel understood that day that it was not of the king to kill Abner the son of Ner.
38
ואמר מלכא לעבדוהי הלא תדעון ארי רב ושליט נפל יומא הדין בישראל:
byshral hdyn ywma npl wshlyT rb ary thdewn hla lebdwhy mlka wamr
The king said to his servants, “Don’t you know that a prince and a great man has fallen today in Israel?

ואנא יומא דין הדיוט ומרבי למלכא וגבריא האלין בני צרויה קשן מני ישלם יי לעבדי בישתא כבישתיה:
kbyshthyh byshtha lebdy yy yshlm mny qshn tsrwyh bny halyn wgbrya lmlka wmrby hdywT dyn ywma wana
I am weak today, though anointed king. These men, the sons of Zeruiah are too hard for me. May Yahweh reward the evildoer according to his wickedness.”
